Electricity has been restored to the interconnected islands of Addu City following an outage that lasted nearly two hours.
Fenaka Corporation, the electricity provider in the country’s second-most populous city, first reported the disruption at 11:37am via the Hithadhoo Fenaka Branch Viber group. The company said a technical issue with a generator forced the powerhouse to shut down, causing a complete blackout across the interconnected islands.
Fenaka assured residents that efforts were underway to resolve the problem and restore electricity as quickly as possible.
At 12:16pm, the company announced that the powerhouse had been brought back online and that technicians were carrying out a phased restoration of power to affected areas.
Full restoration was confirmed at 13:29pm, just minutes before the outage would have reached the two-hour mark.
Fenaka Corporation apologized to the public for the inconvenience caused during the disruption.
Addu, home to thousands of people, has been plagued by frequent power outages.
Last year, Fenaka installed a 1.8-megawatt generator set on February 21 to fix the power outages in the linked islands of the city. Another 1-megawatt generator set was sent on March 13, and a 1.8-megawatt generator on March 25.
But the city continues to be affected by power disruptions.
Fenaka has previously said it needs generators to create an additional 15 kilowatts of power to fuel the city.
Many rest their hopes in a project to build a powerhouse in Addu, the work on which has yet to start.
