Man fined MVR 32,800 after admitting to stealing Nescafe bottle from Redwave

A man has been sentenced to five months and 14 days in jail for stealing a bottle of Nescafe Classic worth MVR 175 from Redwave Plaza.

The man, from Sh. Komandoo was charged with unauthorized possession of another person’s property. According to the Criminal Court, he concealed the coffee bottle inside his T‑shirt and attempted to leave the store without paying.

He pleaded guilty during the hearing and requested leniency, saying he wanted the opportunity to return to society as a better person. However, the court noted that he had a prior conviction, which warranted an increased sentence.

Criminal Court Chief Judge Adam Mohamed issued a sentence of five months and 14 days. The judge then commuted the jail term to a fine, requiring the man to pay MVR 32,800 instead of serving time.

The case was filed at the Criminal Court on January 28 this year and concluded on February 12.
