For the first time, the Zakat Fund has provided assistance to cover down payments for social housing units allocated by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC).
The initiative was announced in October, when Zakat House said it would pay the down payments for 14 individuals listed in the national register of poor and needy. At the time, the estimated cost was USD 340,000.
According to figures released on Sunday, MVR 91,000 has been spent so far on down payments for these flats.
A media officer from the Islamic Ministry confirmed that this is the first time the Zakat Fund has supported housing payments.
In addition to housing, Zakat House allocated MVR 1.48 million in December for medical assistance. However, the total amount spent on treatment reached MVR 2.13 million, as funds were also distributed to individuals who had received support prior to December.
