Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef on Monday said the government’s efforts are restoring youth confidence in the fisheries sector, which had seen declining interest in recent years.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the fish canning factory in G.Dh. Fiyoari, the Vice President said the project would boost development in the sector and encourage the introduction of new vessels and modern fishing operations.

He noted that many young people had left fishing for other jobs due to a lack of confidence in the industry. The government, he said, is working to make fisheries profitable and sustainable.

“The President is working very hard to put fisheries on the right track in a conflicting system and ensure adequate benefits,” said Vice President Latheef. “Today, these efforts have created confidence among the youth and the public that we have a future here.”

The Fiyoari factory was initially planned with a cold storage capacity of 1,500 metric tonnes, but this has since been doubled to 3,000 metric tonnes. The project also includes a fish meal plant capable of processing 100 tonnes of fish per day, and a separate facility with the same capacity for meat.
