The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has been awarded the contract to develop three new sports complexes in the Male' region.
The complexes will be built in Hulhumale' Phase I, Hulhumale' Phase II, and Vilimale'.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday at the Ministry of Sports and Health. Sports Minister Abdullah Raafiu signed on behalf of the ministry, while MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed on behalf of the company.
The government has previously announced plans to establish sports complexes across the country.
It is notable that MACL, primarily mandated with airport management, has in recent years been awarded several projects outside its core scope, including the installation of outdoor gyms in rural islands. These decisions have drawn public criticism.

According to the ministry, the new sports complexes will be designed to accommodate multiple sporting activities and will also serve as venues for key community and social programs.
Meanwhile, the existing sports complex in Hulhumale' Phase I has been facing maintenance challenges. Sports groups operating there, including the Sharks Martial Arts Association, have struggled to continue their classes due to the condition of the facility.
