British High Commissioner meets Climate Change Department to discuss sea level and coral threats

The British High Commissioner to the Maldives, Nick Low, met with officials from the Climate Change Department on Monday to discuss the country’s climate priorities, including support to address salinity rise and coral bleaching caused by climate change.

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, which said on Tuesday that discussions focused on technical and financial assistance the UK could provide to help the Maldives respond to climate emergencies such as rainfall flooding, sea level rise, and long-term coral degradation.

The ministry was represented by Amjad Abdullah, Director General of the Climate Change Department. The British High Commission delegation included Ashley Rogers, Head of the Maldives and Indian Ocean Team, and Saina Saeed, Political and Communications Officer.

The ministry said the Maldives shared its efforts to secure funding from international climate finance mechanisms and outlined its national priorities for adaptation and resilience.

The meeting also addressed the importance of long-term partnerships to help the Maldives access multilateral climate funds and implement sustainable solutions to climate-induced challenges.
