The Ministry of Fisheries has opened public consultations on the Fisheries and Marine Resources Plan, inviting comments to help shape a long‑term roadmap for sustainable fisheries development.
According to the ministry, the plan aims to address existing challenges in the fisheries sector and outline strategies to sustainably develop and manage fisheries and marine resources.
An online form has been opened for the public to submit comments. The ministry said the information collected will play a key role in defining the vision and direction of the masterplan, drawing on the experiences, insights and ideas of stakeholders.
The consultation process is open to fishermen, boat owners, industry workers and the general public. Respondents can share their views on sectoral challenges, fisheries policies and broader marine resource management.
Fishermen have long described fishing as the “bloodline” of Maldivians, noting that significant work is still needed to strengthen the sector. Many of their concerns remain unresolved. Recently, yellowfin tuna fishermen represented by the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU) held protests over longstanding issues.
