Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom declared on Wednesday evening that there is no legal basis for him to be imprisoned, warning that any attempt to do so would be “the biggest mistake” the government could make.

Speaking at the RESET rally held at Artificial Beach, Yameen was asked whether he might face obstacles to contesting the upcoming presidential election. He dismissed the possibility of imprisonment, insisting that the law and rules protect him.

“Therefore, if this government puts me in jail, put me in jail. That is the biggest mistake they will make,” he said.

Yameen recalled that former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had believed he could win an election while keeping Yameen imprisoned, but said destiny is determined by Allah.

“Am I coming out and standing in front of you for a joke? Am I coming out and doing political work, working for the people because I am afraid of being put in jail? So they are trying to scare the wrong person. There is no need to try to scare me,” he said.

Yameen also criticized President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, claiming he lacks support in the Maldives and would lose even existing backing if he attempted to imprison him.

He argued that a fair trial under the rules of justice would not allow him to be jailed, pointing to past cases brought against him during Solih’s administration and urging supporters to look at their outcomes.

“Hopefully, I cannot be touched according to the rules of law and justice,” he said.

Yameen added that he would take responsibility for his own actions and would not flee from any challenges.
