Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam on Saturday pledged that the government will not turn away from fishermen or ignore their concerns, promising again to work closely with them to resolve industry challenges.

Speaking during Fishermen’s Day celebrations in Dhuvaafaru, Raa Atoll, where President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu also met with fishermen, Shiyam responded to criticism that he was less accessible than the President.

“It would be very easy to resolve any unrest regarding the minister if it was told directly,” Shiyam said, acknowledging that he may not have worked as closely with fishermen as expected.

The minister noted that fishermen raise both major and minor concerns through various channels, and stressed that the government is also addressing issues faced by those working with private companies, including members of the protesting Bodu Kanneli Masverinnge Union (BKMU).

“I can assure you that I will hopefully work with you as closely as possible in implementing the President’s manifesto… We most assuredly will not try to solve the problem by hiding from your words,” Shiyam said.

His remarks come as the BKMU continues protests over unfulfilled government promises. Several protesters, including union secretary general and Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, were arrested. Demonstrators have called for Shiyam’s resignation if their demands remain unmet.
