The death toll from the capsize of a landing craft off the Male’ Commercial Port on Sunday has risen to two, as a second Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) worker succumbed to the serious injuries he sustained in the incident.
The landing craft had capsized at around 03:44 pm on Saturday, injuring six of 14 people who were onboard at the time.
The six people rushed to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) - identified as four Maldivian citizens and two foreign nationals – included two who sustained serious injuries.
One of them – 25-year-old Ali Aflah Abdulla – succumbed to his injuries on early Monday.
The GA. Gemanafushi native’s death came hours after a Bangladeshi national injured in the incident – identified as 32-year-old Masud Hossain - also died in the hospital.
Both Aflah and Masud were employed by the MPL as laborers.
According to MPL, Masud had worked at the MPL as a laborer since October 2022, and Aflah, since December 2024.
It raises the death toll in the tragic incident to two.
The incident comes two weeks after a landing craft capsized while en route to K. Eriyadhoo, resulting in the death of three sailors.
