Four men arrested in connection with the robbery of a suitcase containing foreign currency at Velana International Airport (VIA) have been remanded in custody pending trial.

The incident occurred around 04:45 hours on October 27. Police confirmed that four suspects were arrested and initially held under a five-day remand, which has now been extended until trial.

The suspects are:

  • Ahmed Raihan Naeem, 20, M. Chorus, K. Malé

  • Mazin Moosa, 25, Reysham, L. Maavah

According to police, the suspects arrived at the airport in a taxi and stole suitcases containing foreign currency. A speedboat used in the escape was later recovered.

Home Minister Ali Ihusaan confirmed the arrests and the recovery of the vessel but did not disclose whether the stolen money had been recovered.

The money was reportedly being transported by the Bank of Maldives (BML) to the departure terminal’s cash counter and may have included euros and other currencies.
