The Maldives Zakat House has made the decision to utilize the Zakat Fund to help 14 individuals registered as poor make the downpayments on flats they have received under social housing schemes.
In a statement on Thursday, the Zakat House said they are aware that some of the individuals registered with the state as poor have been struggling to make the downpayments on flats awarded to them under social housing schemes.
Zakat House said that it discussed the situation with the Zakat Council, and decided to utilize the Zakat Fund to help make the downpayments.
“As such, the Zakat Fund will be used to make total MVR 340,000 in downpayments for 14 individuals,” said the Zakat House.
The Zakat House said the funds will not be transferred to the individuals themselves, but to the relevant state authorities.
The agency added that the 14 individuals will subsequently undergo a review of their status as poor based on the changes to their quality of life.
The Zakat House said that the purpose of making the decision is to help the poor turn around their lives for the better.
The Zakat House also announced plans to introduce a zakat beneficiary card, which can be used for the poor to access aid for medical care that the Aasandha scheme does not cover, as well as for food, education and housing needs.
