Over MVR 151 million due to Customs at the end of last year

Maldives Customs Service has said that by the end of last year, over MVR 151 million was owed to the institution by various groups.

Documents shared by Customs with Sun Online show that as at 31 December 2012, MVR 151,946,854.01 was due to Customs in relation to 291 cases.

The documents show that MVR 121,395,289.45 is due from 41 cases currently in progress in court. One of these cases involves an amount of MVR 110 million.

The documents show that 24 cases involving MVR 13,457,814.36 were filed to police last year in pursuit of the money due to Maldives Customs. This includes cheque bounce cases involving MVR 9.5 million. Also, procedural inconsistencies are being dealt with of 226 cases involving a sum of MVR 16,093,750.20.
