PPM takes lead over DRP in terms of membership

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has taken lead over Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and become the second largest political party in the country.

The political party registry of the Elections Commission (EC) shows that PPM, with 22,765 members, has 583 members more than DRP, which has 22,182 members.

The registry shows that over the past week, PPM also submitted more membership forms than DRP. It submitted 603 forms, and also has 1,410 forms waiting to be included in the registry.

DRP, on the other hand, submitted only 74 forms over the past week and has 611 forms waiting to be included in the registry.

The largest political party is Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) with 46,533 members. MDP submitted 243 membership forms last week, and has 497 forms waiting to be included in the registry.

The fourth largest party is Jumhooree Party (JP) with 12,708 members. JP submitted 409 application forms last week, and also has 409 forms waiting to be included in the registry.

The fifth largest party is Adhaalath Party, which has 5,898 members. Adhaalath Party submitted 1,400 application forms last week, and also has 3,000 forms waiting to be included in the registry.

The difference in membership between President Dr Mohamed Waheed’s Gaumee Itthihad Party (GIP) and recently formed Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) is a mere 32 members. GIP has 3,466 members while MDA has 3,434 members.

GIP submitted 502 membership forms to EC last week and has 1,823 forms waiting to be included in the registry; while MDA submitted 536 membership forms last week and has 1,537 forms waiting to be included in the registry.
