President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Tuesday that the Uthuru Athafaru lagoon near Hangnaameedhoo will be officially designated as part of the island, and that Alikoe island in the atoll will be made available for tourism excursions.

The announcement was made during the President’s visit to Hangnaameedhoo in South Ari Atoll, a growing local tourism hub.

To further support the island’s tourism development, the President said North Athafaru will be incorporated into Hangnaameedhoo’s jurisdiction, expanding opportunities for residents and entrepreneurs.

He assured the community that the government will extend full support and cooperation for the island’s development efforts.

Highlighting the lack of uninhabited islands nearby that could be used for tourist excursions, the President said Alikoe island will be designated as a tourism site accessible to Hangnaameedhoo and neighboring islands.

He emphasized that Alikoe will not be leased or allocated to any party. Instead, it will be made available for use by tourism operators from Hangnaameedhoo and surrounding islands, under regulations to be formulated and overseen by the Ministry of Tourism.

Hangnaameedhoo, home to approximately 700 residents, has been actively working to expand its tourism sector, with guesthouses and local businesses contributing to the island’s economic growth.
