President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has issued a decree on Thursday, officially amending the jurisdiction of Thaa Atoll Madifushi to include the islands of Ufuriyaa and Kolhufushi.
The decision, announced by the President’s Office, aligns with a presidential pledge made when he visited Madifushi in February last year, to integrate these islands under Madifushi’s administrative authority. He had also pledged that he would help create more economic opportunities for the Madifushi Island Council.
The decree was enacted under the powers granted to the President by Section 56-1 (a) of the Decentralisation Act, which authorizes the President to designate and modify the jurisdictions of City and Island Councils.
This move is expected to streamline local governance and enhance administrative efficiency in the region.
A revised chart outlining the updated geographic jurisdiction of Th. Madifushi has been published in the Government Gazette, formalizing the change.
