The Indian High Commission has said that the discussions between officials of the government of India and stakeholders in Maldives regarding the stay of former President Mohammed Nasheed at the High Commission premises, have provided some forward movement.
The four-member Indian delegation currently visiting Maldives, led by Mr Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Joint Secretary of Ministry of External Affairs, has held meetings with several senior representatives of the government of Maldives, leaders of all major political parties and heads of independent institutions.
A press statement released by the Indian High Commission today states, “These interactions have provided some forward movement and the team continues to work further on the available inputs so that the matter could be resolved to satisfaction.”
The statement also says that the delegation had received cooperation from the Maldivian government and all other stakeholders, who had agreed to work in the spirit of understanding and the close cooperation that exists between the two countries.
Nasheed took refuge in the Indian High Commission on 13 February following efforts by the police to arrest him in order to implement a court order to produce in him court for the trial regarding the alleged unconstitutional arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed during Nasheed’s presidency. A second similar court order to the police also could not be implemented, as Nasheed has remained in the High Commission.
