Youth arrested for defrauding MVR 30,000 in 12 scams

Maldives Police Service states a Maldivian youth suspected in 12 different scams has been arrested with assistance from the public.

The suspect has been identified Saif Ahmed Didi, 30, Ma. Rabeeu, Male’.

Police said he was arrested for defrauding multiple people of over MVR 30,000. In this regard, the Police detailed that he leveraged various social media platforms to deceive victims into transferring money to his account.  

Saif was arrested from Hulhumale’ Phase II under a court order with assistance from the public.

Criminal Court has remanded Saif in custody for 10 days. The case is under further investigation by the Maldives Police Service’s Anti-Scam Centre.

According to the Police, Saif has a prior criminal record of vandalism and theft.

Scams have become prevalent in the Maldives, with many falling victim to them. Subsequently, the Police have incepted a special unit to combat scams.
