Foreign Ministry has indicated that some international parties have made misleading statements.
A statement released by the Foreign Ministry stated that “the Maldives is not in political turmoil” and emphasised that it was important for all to characterise the situation in its proper perspective and to refrain from issuing statements that might create alarm.
The statement quotes the Foreign Minister Dr. Abdul Samad Abdulla, saying that “The country is in perfect normalcy. This is an election year and, all political figures are involved in political campaigning and vying for maximum media attention”.
Commenting on President Nasheed’s continued presence in the High Commission since 13 February, the Minister said that he is staying at the Indian High Commission on his own free will and that he has met with his family today and continues to hold his political meetings with his supporters.
