Former President Gayoom

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that the Twitter account of former President and PPM President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been hacked.

PPM Spokesperson Ahmed Mahloof said in a tweet that Gayoom’s Twitter account had been hacked, and that the hackers had tweeted from Gayoom’s account in a manner that could worsen ties with India.

Mahloof did not indicate exactly what was tweeted from Gayoom’s account.

Mahloof has confirmed this over the phone as well.

He said that the tweets made from Gayoom’s account at the moment are not valid, and that efforts are under way to regain control of the account.

Gayoom opened Twitter and Facebook accounts on his 75th birthday last year.
