While the Indian government said earlier today that it was in touch with Maldivian authorities to resolve the issue related to former President Mohamed Nasheed, the Maldivian government has said that no such discussions have taken place.
Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement issued tonight that the no discussions have been held between the Maldivian government and the Indian High Commission or any other Indian authority regarding Nasheed’s situation.
Foreign Ministry said in the statement that India only confirmed that Nasheed was in the High Commission after being repeatedly requested to clarify the situation.
Indian External Affairs Ministry said earlier today in a statement that they were “in touch with the relevant Maldivian authorities to resolve the situation”.
Maldivian Foreign Ministry noted in its statement that the trial against Nasheed is carried out by the Prosecutor General’s Office and the courts of Maldives, which are two independent state institutions; which means that as in all democratic countries, the Maldivian government will not attempt to halt the work of these two institutions.
Foreign Ministry expressed sadness over the fact that statements were given to the media by Indian officials about the events that transpired today, without consulting with the Maldivian government.
