The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has opened applications for the vacant role of the commission’s secretary-general for the third time in close to four months.

Secretary-generals are appointed to the ACC for a five-year term. The term of former SG Mohamed Saleem had expired on December 4, 2024.

The ACC opened applications for the vacancy on December 24, and then again on January 15.

It announced the vacancy again, for the third time, on Tuesday.

The position earns a monthly salary of MVR 36,500.

The application deadline is April 30.

The ACC is an independent legal entity established in 2008 with a mandate to promote integrity, prevent and combat corruption in all arms of the state. However, the commission has been hit for years with allegations of bowing under government pressure in its investigations.

Earlier this week, Supreme Court Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir asked the police for a criminal investigation against Adam Shamil, the president of the ACC. She has accused Shamil of sending a letter to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) falsely claiming to have opened an investigation into her before the ACC had launched one, and of attempting to influence her.

The ACC is allocated millions of Rufiyaa from the state budget each year to fulfil its mandate.
