Schools have reopened for the new academic year on Monday after the long holidays.

Education Ministry said the new academic year commenced with 90,000 students.

More than 2,000 students were newly enrolled in first grade in the Male' area, while over 5,000 students were newly enrolled in first grade across atolls.

Meanwhile, 1,200 students have shifted to Male' area schools from the atolls for the new academic year, while over 500 students shifted to schools within Male' area.

Some 84,000 students are enrolled in government schools.

Similar to previous years, Education Ministry reported an increase in the number of students studying in Male’ area schools. In this regard, the Ministry detailed that 33 percent of the students enrolled in various grades for the new academic year are based in Male’ area schools.

The new academic year began with 11,000 teachers, 10,000 of whom are employed at government schools.

Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu states the academic year began with all the necessary resources in place for the students.
