The city council has brought in two dewatering pumps with the capacity to pump out over 11,356 liters per minute to dewater the flooding-prone streets of Male’.
In a statement on Sunday, the city council said it began efforts to procure the two Global Pump 6GST C pumps – which is far more powerful than the pumps being usually used in Male’ to dewater the streets – back in November last year.
The city council said they decided to handover the pumps to the Defense Ministry and sent a letter on Friday notifying the ministry of the decision.
In the letter, the city council described the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) as the city council’s closest partner in addressing the concerns of the public and providing assistance in emergency situations.
According to the city council, the new pumps are capable of pumping out 11,356.24 liters of water per minute.
“The pumps used in the past to dewater the streets of Male’ had the capacity to pump between 900 liters and 1,300 liters per minute,” said the council.
The city council expressed concern that the storm drain system installed in Male’ has proved incapable of properly draining floodwater, resulting in damages to homes and private property whenever it rains and floods.
