National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) states 75 homes in N. Henbadhoo have been impacted by floods caused by nonstop heavy rain since this morning.

Henbadhoo Council President Hussain Aboobakr told Sun that the island experienced nonstop heavy rain from 6:30am to 11:00pm this morning leading to severe floods, which at some areas exceed two feet.

He added that household items in houses impacted by the floods were significantly damaged.

“Some 70 houses have been impacted by floods. They recorded significant damage. Huge cooperation has been received from everyone from the island to dewater the houses,” he said.

In this regard, Aboobakr detailed that dewatering efforts are being undertaken by MNDF and Police in collaboration with the island’s residents.

“We have established a dewatering system. The flooding today is a result of the nonstop heavy rain for a long period. I do not remember a day in my life we have seen greater floods than today,” he said.

However, he stressed that damage caused by the floods can only identified once the dewatering efforts are completed and that it has not yet been identified whether anyone would require temporary housing.

According to NDMA, 75 homes in Henbadhoo have been impacted by flooding and have recorded damage to various extents.
