Nilam

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has said that their former intelligence chief Brigadier General Ahmed Nilam has only been suspended from some of his responsibilities and that he will still be able to attend to his regular military duties. Nilam was suspended with regard to an internal investigation.

Colonel Abdul Raheem Abdulla told Sun today that Nilam’s does not restrain him from carrying out other duties in the organization. Colonel Abdul Raheem however did not say which responsibilities he is allowed to carry out.

“He has been suspended from a commander’s responsibilities, due to an investigation that is currently underway. He can however attend his job, and do other work,” Abdul Raheem said.

Nilam was suspended less than 48 hours after his interview to the Parliament Committee on the Oversight of the Government was made public.

In the committee interview, Nilam said that he received intelligence reports that an assassination attempt was being planned against former president Mohamed Nasheed, which was to take place during a military function. He however, did not mention whether any actions were taken regarding these reports.
