President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Monday, has affirmed that two hectares of land will be reclaimed as a separate island under the land reclamation project in Dh. Maaenboodhoo as he had pledged during the presidential campaign.
A total of 30 hectares of land will be reclaimed under this project.
The President visited Maaenboodhoo on Monday as part of his ongoing tour of Dhaalu Atoll.
Speaking with the residents of the island, the President underscored the shortage of land as the most pertinent issue faced at Maaenboodhoo.
“The shortage of land has become so severe. The most pertinent needs of the residents of each island are different. The most pertinent need of the residents of this island is to resolve the shortage of land,” he said.
President Muizzu detailed that physical works on the land reclamation project will commence one the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) is approved. He added that work on EIA is expected to be completed within the next two to three weeks.
According to the President, projects that are stalled across all Maldivian islands will be resumed next month as well.
The shortage of land, a significant challenge on some islands, has led to housing limitations for their residents. Housing is notably one of the country's most pressing national issues, and the current administration is working on addressing it.
Prior to this, President Muizzu described this year's budget as being centered on housing.
