Significant damage as Vaavu shipwreck overturns

Significant damage has been recorded at one most popular tourist attractions in the Maldives, a wrecked ship in Vaavu Atoll, has overturned. 

A video shared by ‘Hevana Maldives’ a guesthouse from Keydhoo shows the overturned ship. Most of the ship is completely submerged in water.

Speaking with Sun, Vaavu Atoll Council President Shujau Ali said the ship overturned during the bad weather spell  Maldives recently experienced, adding the incident had caused significant damage.

Nevertheless, he expressed hope to restore the area.  He said the Council was undertaking efforts in this trajectory, in collaboration with other parties.

The shipwreck is located off V. Keyodhoo.

The vessel was first sighted by two fishermen from Felidhoo approximately 10 years ago. Attempts to salvage the ship were unsuccessful, and it eventually wrecked at its current location after being carried there by currents.

The shipwreck is visited by many tourists from resorts and neighboring islands every day. It is also popular among locals.
