Vape ban officially in effect, heavy fines on offenders

Vaping is now a culpable offence.

The ban on the import, sale, and usage of vaping devices and accessories is officially in effect as of December 15, 2024.

This ban is reflective of the amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, which President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified earlier on November 13, 2024.

While the import, sale and usage of vaping devices or its accessories will be effectively banned, offenders are subject to heavy fines that include:

  • Usage of vape devices or vaping: MVR 5,000
  • Individuals selling vape devices and accessories: MVR 20,000
  • For each vape device or accessory sold: MVR 10,000
  • Free distribution of vape devices: MVR 10,000

The amendment to the Tobacco Control Act aims to effectively ban the usage of e-cigarettes, vape devices, and accessories from being imported to the Maldives, sold, or distributed freely.

Besides this, the amendment also seeks to increase penalties and solve issues related to taking punitive measures against unlawful conduct.

The government has also established Smoking Cessation Clinics to help those who wish to quit the habit. Those who are seeking to quit smoking can contact the help line at 1676.
