Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has instructed HDh. Nolhivaranfaru Council to revoke the provisional list of recipients of 100 housing units being issued from the island.
The instructions come following an investigation into a petition filed with HRCM alongside the signatures of 279 residents from Nolhivaramfaru claiming the policy on awarding the housing units was not the most “just”.
Following their investigation, HRCM cited the possibility of the existing policy on awarding the housing units being an infringement of constitutionally guaranteed rights of some applicants who submitted applications for the housing units.
The Commission has instructed the Council to revise the policy in a manner that addresses their concerns while ensuring there is no leeway for infringements of constitutionally guaranteed rights of the applicants.
It also instructed to revoke the provisional list of the recipients of the housing units.
HRCM warned action in accordance with the law if the Council fails to follow the Commission’s instructions.
The Commission’s instructions have also been shared with the Local Government Authority (LGA) and the Housing Ministry.
