HDC to ‘name and shame’ non-payers

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Monday revealed its decision to publicly ‘name and shame’ those who have not made regular payments they owed to the corporation.

The corporation in a statement on Monday said, that as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its operations, HDC has decided to reveal the identities of all its debtors along with taking all necessary steps to collect its payment receivables.

All debtors, whether they have acquired leases for commercial venues or for developmental purposes, are required to pay the outstanding money before November 30^th. The debtors are also encouraged to ensure to verify of any outstanding amounts by this date, and have them settled to avoid any further complications.

The debtors that fail to comply in paying the outstanding amounts within the provided timeframe, but with legitimate excuses, will receive notices from HDC. The corporation will also publish details of the payment receivables, including the identity and the amount owed by the debtors.

Besides HDC, several other state agencies and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have mounted stronger efforts to claim outstanding monies from various parties. While HDC has decided to introduce its ‘name and shame’ list, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) have been practicing this for some time.
