Kadhdhoo Airport to be managed by Island Aviation, Kaadedhdhoo Airport by Villa Air

Transport Ministry has said that letters of intent will be signed today with Island Aviation Services Limited, to award the company with the management of Laamu Kadhdhoo Airport, and also with Villa Air to award the company with the management of Gaafu Dhaal Kaadedhdhoo Airport. Both companies won the management of the airports through winning the respective bids, under the government initiative to privatize the airports.

Director of Regional Airports Sami Ageel said that signing of the letter of intent will take place during the ceremony scheduled to be held this evening to mark the start of international flights from Hanimaadhoo Airport. He said that although the letter of intent is to be signed today, the plan for the management of the airport will be decided after discussions between the government and the two companies.

“Today, we are signing the letter of intent, following the bid of evaluation process. After the letter of intent, decisions will be made on how the airport will be managed,” said Sami Ageel.

He said that three airports were opened for bids, and Villa Air alone had shown interest to manage the Kaadedhdhoo Airport, while alongside Island Aviation, Premier Equity had shown interest to manage Kadhdhoo Airport. He said that no qualified parties showed interest for the management of the Kooddoo Airport.

A special event is scheduled to be held in Hanimaadhoo Airport this evening to mark the start of international flights to the airport, which will be inaugurated by the President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. The first flight from Hanimaadhoo to Trivandrum is scheduled to take depart tonight. The price of a two way ticket from Hanimaadhoo to Trivandrum stands at $199 (MVR 3068.58) for the next three months. Island aviation has informed that after the third trip, visa to India will be arranged along with the purchase of the ticket.
