Case will be filed regarding illegal arrest of Judge Abdulla: PG

Prosecutor General Ahmed Muiz has said today that Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has been requested for an investigation of the arrest of Judge Abdulla by the Maldivian military, and that a case will be filed against those involved in this act as soon as these investigations are completed.

Responding to a question posed by Sun, Muiz said that a meeting was held today to discuss this issued with HRCM, during which discussions took place regarding the arrest of Judge Abdulla which was a violation of the law, and other instances where the military has failed to comply with court orders.

“The biggest issue here is that the arrest of Judge Abdulla was made by MNDF, which does not have the authority to do so,” PG Muiz said.

He further said that a court case will be filed as soon as HRCM completes their investigation into this issue.

The Criminal Court issued an order today which follows sections (4), (8) and (10) of the act (4a) which protects respect for the judicial system. The order says that the Prosecutor General is to file a case against the Chief of Defence Force and all persons involved in the arrest of Judge Abdulla Mohamed within three days, as this arrest was made in violation of the law and is disrespectful of the judicial system of the Maldives.
