President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday evening has said that the pathway needed for national development can be achieved by acquiring respect on the global stage.

He made the remarks in a video message publicized to celebrate the 59th anniversary of the Maldives’ membership at the United Nations.

In his video message, President Muizzu emphasized on the role of making Maldives’ voice “resonate in international forums”.

On the reason for Maldives to become a member of the United Nations, Muizzu said that the citizens' acknowledgement of a state's sovereignty is not enough for its preservation and longevity, but the acceptance of the international community is also necessary.

"It is necessary to inform the world that a certain country, has its own sovereign state and borders, and to ensure the international community respects this," Muizzu said.

Muizzu further underscored the importance of voicing out in the international arena and becoming a state that respects and is respected by the international community.

He also revealed that his most prominent role in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) would be to present his vision for the progress of the Maldives, by voicing the desires and feelings of the Maldivian people to the international community.

"The Maldives' journey with UN is a remarkable achievement, highlighting the crucial role of such a small nation at the global arena," Muizzu added.

While noting the role of Maldives at the United Nations, President Muizzu expressed that he desired Maldives to build upon this path by taking up more responsibilities in its endeavor for progress.

As such, President Muizzu revealed Maldives has been seeking a membership role at the UN's Economic and Social Council.

"Our vision is on moving forward at brisk pace."

He concluded the video message by reiterating commitment to implementing the Maldives’ foreign policy centered on a “Maldives first” approach.

Muizzu is scheduled to deliver his address at the 79th session of the UNGA on Tuesday.
