Maldives falls 30 points in Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index

Maldives has fallen behind 30 points in the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index this year. Press freedom in the country is said to have fallen with regard to the unsettling events that followed the change of government in early 2012.

The index currently ranks Maldives at 103. Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index 2013 report states that Maldives ranking fell sharply due to events that led to the resignation of President Mohamed Nasheed in February, which had led to violence and threats against journalists and state television and private media outlets regarded as pro-Nasheed, by the alleged coup leaders.

The report also states that press freedom has been curtailed during anti-government protests following Nasheeds resignation.
