ACC investigating 896 cases related to SOEs

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) states the Commission is presently investigating 896 cases related to State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

Speaking at the Parliament’s Committee on State-Owned Enterprises on Monday, ACC’s President Adam Shaamil explained that cases lodged with the Commission are investigated in two phases; a preliminary phase and the deeper investigative phase.

According to Shaamil, ACC is presently investigating a total of 896 cases related SOEs of which 316 cases are in the preliminary phase and 580 cases are in the deeper investigative phase.

“These are concerning numbers,” he stressed.

He also spoke regarding two critical moments that the commission faced since its current members assumed office. In this regard, he detailed receiving a vast number of cases in conjunction with September’s presidential election and April’s parliamentary election; a common occurrence during elections. Shaamil also attributed the influx of cases to the establishment of an easier process to file cases with ACC during the elections.

Speaking further, Shaamil cited ACC’s main responsibility as investigating cases and seeking charges from the Prosecutor General’s Office in cases they deem fit.

ACC’s annual report for last year shows that a total of 1,151 cases were filed with the commission during the period of which 112 cases pertained to misuse of state funds and resources.

The report also read that only MVR 234,532 were recovered from the MVR 50.3 billion which the commission instructed various government entities to recover to the state.
