Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) on Saturday, launched the 'Fenun Dhirun' art competition in commemoration of the World Environment Day.

The inaugural ceremony held on Saturday evening at the Sultan Park, Minister of Youth Ibrahim Waheed and MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen took part in the inaugural ceremony held on Saturday evening at the Sultan Park.

MWSC Managing Director had highlighted the competition's importance.

"Our aim is to provide a platform to showcase the art from talented artisans through an expo, which we launched commemorating the environment and oceans days," Matheen said.

According to Youth Minister Waheed, the title of the competition was perfect, and highlighted the connection between water and the island nation.

"I believe Maldivian artists and artisans have the caliber to impress and awe us," Waheed said, speaking about the art expo's importance.

He expressed confidence in the success of MWSC's initiative launched Saturday.

"Development of artistic creativity and related fields is an obligation of the state. We hope other institutions will join the efforts launched today by us and MWSC, and support local artists."

MWSC invited local artists to express how they perceived 'Fenun Dhirun' in their preferred artistic medium.

Three winners will be selected from the competition;

  • First Prize: MVR 50,000
  • Second Prize: MVR 35,000
  • Third Prize: MVR 15,000

Besides the art expo, MWSC is set to launch a 'People's Choice' Awards to select the best art works from the expo; selected by public votes.

MWSC also highlights the competition's unique approach allowing visitors to purchase their favorite art works.

Artists will receive 15 percent from the proceedings of each art work of theirs' sold.

The remaining 85 percent raised from selling the art works will be utilized towards planting trees across the Maldives.
