Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar on Wednesday, announced the state's plan to launch public work services on 15 islands next year.
At the inaugural ceremony to launch workshop on improving general administration, Shareef highlighted public work services have been extended across Maldives for nearly thirty years.
He further noted that several of the public work sites, the ministry's team recently inspected, were in dilapidated conditions with some of the equipment used for the works rendered completely useless.
"Besides lack of adequate space for employees, or out-of-commission equipment, we also noticed significant operational challenges as well," the minister said.
"While we have come this far, we still have not found the persons or the authority to mandate with the responsibilities of governing this sector."
Speaker further on the topic, Shareef said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had earlier stated his administration's prioritization to introduce public work services across the Maldives.
He said budget will be allocated next year to establish public works in 15 islands across Maldives.
While the new public work services have been scheduled for next year, Shareef said significant work is still required to upgrade and improve the infrastructure and services of the existing public works establishments.
"We will focus on proceeding with this initiative under a planned and orderly manner within the decentralization system in collaboration with the council," the minister added.
