Parliament, on Monday, has approved the appointment of Elections Commission (EC)’s incumbent Secretary General Hassan Zakariyya as a member of the commission, to replace EC’s former Vice President Ismail Habeeb, whose membership term has expired.

Zakariyya received approval with the unanimous votes of 39 lawmakers who participated in the vote at Monday’s parliamentary sitting.

Habeeb’s membership term expired on March 13th. It marked his second term as a member of the election body. The law prohibits him from undertaking an additional term.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu forwarded the name of Zakariyya from the individuals who submitted applications for the post to the parliament on February 20th.

The term of EC’s President Fuad Thaufeeg, who is also serving a second term, is set to expire in November of this year.
