Bar Council of the Maldives on Sunday, has elected Hussain Siraj as its new president.
Siraj was appointed at the council's election on Sunday to elect members to the vacant positions of the Executive Committee.
Siraj secured 224 votes in the election, beating Mohamed Faisal who received 172 votes. The council was required to elect its president following the demise of Ismail Wisham, who originally held to the position.
The new president, Siraj was the Chairman of the Maldives International Arbitration in 2019.
Other members elected to the council include Ahmed Shifau, who secured 248 votes to become the new Executive Committee member, while the council said 88 members voted against him.
According to the Bar Council, 991 general members participated for the election before the registration window expired.
The election was held from 13:00 to 15:00 on Sunday through 'FahiVote', the online web application of Maldives Securities Depository.
