The Coalition of 23 December has said today that the government’s threats will not scare its participants or cause them to back down. They will, in fact, instead be more enthusiastic and zealous in raising the voices for the issues at hand.
This announcement comes at a time when the government is taking participants of the Coalition into custody, releasing them from custody and summoning them to the Police Headquarters.
The Coalition said that the activities undertaken for the sake of the nation and religion will be continued with even more enthusiasm, and that Maldivians are assured that the rights they are being robbed of today, will once again be attained.
The announcement, signed by the Coalition’s Spokesperson Abdulla Mohamed, said that they condemn the government’s anti-Islamic dealings which interfere with peace in the society. They further strongly condemned the government’s efforts to put an end to religious speeches given in favor or Islam, and the obstructions illegally imposed on the preparations for the mass conference planned to take place on 24 February.
“The arrest of the Deputy Leader of Gaumee Party Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed for spreading of unauthenticated information against the government, the arrest and summoning of the same party’s Council Member Ahmed Ibrahim Didi (Sandhaanu Ahmed Didi) to the Police Headquarters, the arrest of the same Party’s Deputy Leader Abdul Matheen for calling for the resignation of the Home Minister, are interpreted as extreme, cowardly acts of panic by this autocratic regime,” reads the Announcement.
The Coalition of 23 December called the government to refrain from causing unjust harm to any Maldivian citizen.
