Deputy Leader of Gaumee Party Matheen released

Deputy leader of Gaumee Party Abdul Matheen, who was arrested under accusations of failure to comply with Police Officers, was released last night.

Police Media Official said that Matheen was released around 2.10am last night, however, the Council Member of Gaumee Party is still under Police custody.

“Matheen was released sometime late last night. As investigations are still ongoing, Ahanmaidhy has not yet been released,” he said.

Deputy Leader of Gaumee Party Matheen was arrested last night when he called for the resignation of Home Minister Hassan Afeef who was entering the Police Headquarters at that moment.

Ahanmaidhy was arrested under accusations of spreading unauthenticated information following a speech made by him on DhiTv, where he accused the government of being involved in wrongful dealings in relation to religion. The President requested for an investigation into this matter by the Police.

According to Ahanmaidhy’s Lawyer Dr Hassan Saeed, the reasons for Ahanmaidhy’s arrest were certain statements he made at the Police Headquarters, and to prevent him speaking similarly in public. He also said that the Police have assured to inform the reason for his arrest within 24 hours.

Hassan said that a case will be filed to release Ahanmaidhy as soon as the Court opens tomorrow.

Deputy Leader of Gaumee Party Dr Mohamed Jameel was also summoned to the Police Headquarters last night, as requested by President Nasheed, under accusations of spreading unauthenticated information. However, he was released after about three hours.
