Parliament’sGovernment Oversight Committee has decided to make an announcementto hire two international experts for a period of two weeks to conduct analysis of the report published by the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI). The commission was constituted by a presidential decree to investigate and the events and legitimacy of the transfer of power.
Talking at a news conference, Committee Chair Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed said that the Constitution and Laws empower the committee to seek such experts and that the purpose of involving such experts is it to increase the credibility of their work, especially to the international community.
The committee decision states that the experts have to be lawyers, and that they should have a good wealth of experience and belong to the Commonwealth or any other such international organization of the international community. It also states that they should have ample experience working with legislative bodies.
MP Ali Waheed said that the committee will make the announcement tomorrow. Meanwhile, the committee had on a previous occasion decided to employ an international expert aid in the investigation of the $800 million dollar case involving former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his brother Abdulla Yameen. They had also decided to include such an expert in their travels to Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar to investigate the $800 million case.
