Dr. Muhammad Jameel Ahmed, Deputy Leader of Qawmy Party, has said that the Police have tried to arrest him and conduct investigations while keeping him under custody, for the second time in 24 hours.
The Maldives Police Services has started investigative steps against Dr. Jameel, after the President order the Police to question him on charges of “uttering unsubstantiated speech”.
Dr. Jameel said that today, at the time of Friday Prayer Call, the Police entered his residence at H. Shady Grow, to inform that they wanted to conduct investigations against him by keeping him under police custody.
However, Dr. Jameel, one of the most well-known lawyers in the country, a Minister of the former Government, and a strong critic of MDP Administration now ruling the country, said that the Police did not have any legal grounds to keep him in custody for investigations. He said that the law clearly stated the circumstances under which a person could be kept in detention for investigation, and that those circumstances were not present in his case. He also said that the police could not arrest in without a court warrant.
The Maldives Police Services, on the other hand, said that they made no attempts to detail Dr. Jameel, and said that they were trying to gather more information for the investigations.
Jameel was summoned to the Maldives Police Services last night, and he gave full cooperation for the investigations of the police. After he was released upon completion of the questioning last night, Dr. Jameel said that he was “now certain that President Nasheed would be jailed for a very long time for the illegal acts perpetrated by the Government”.
In addition to Jameel, Ahmed “Sandhaanu” Didi, an outspoken critic of the current Government was also arrested last night for expressing his anti-Government opinions, which the Government described as “unsubstantiated speech”. Sandhaanu Ahmed Didi was a key figure in ousting the former Government from power and bringing MDP to power, but he has recently criticized the Government for failing to live up to their promises.
