The new government’s Attorney General, Ahmed Usham, has said today that he will continue to enforce and uphold the law as the Attorney General.

Usham, who took over as Attorney General yesterday after serving as Villimale MP, tweeted today that exemplary standards will be set to maintain law and order in this government.

He said he is facing the challenges of being the Attorney General with seriousness and sincerity, and that he will be true to his oath as AG.

Former Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath welcomed Usham as he took oath as Attorney General yesterday. Riffath said this is a position of high responsibility and burden. However, he believes that the responsibilities of the Attorney General have been handed over to a capable person.

Usham responded to Riffath's remarks and thanked him.

Usham is a lawyer. He holds a bachelor's degree in law from the University of West England.

Usham has previously served as Deputy Solicitor of the Attorney General's office and Deputy Attorney General.

Usham contested the 2019 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate, but he played a leading role in the formation of the Maldives National Party (MNP) along with Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim and Thimarafushi MP Abdullah Riyaz. Usham is the party's vice-president.
