Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid has said that work was completed on 20 out of 32 bills submitted to the parliament in 2012.
A statement issued by parliament members and the speaker to extend New Year greetings to the people of Maldives says that work was completed on 20 bills, while 18 bills were forwarded to parliament committees in 2012. Also, out of 14 resolutions that were submitted to the parliament, nine were withdrawn; and 27 reports out 32 that were submitted by committees were passed by the parliament.
The statement says that the parliament is directly affected by political unrest faced by the country, and that the events experienced by the parliament this year have been very different and critical. He called for efforts towards achieving peace and progress as the country enters a new year.
The parliament is currently in recess for two months. The past three sessions have been the most turbulent period in the history of the parliament, and parliament members have faced heavy criticism from the people.
