Police were well-prepared for internal and external pressure last year: Report

The Police have said that last year, great effort was put into being prepared for internal and external pressure and into protecting the Maldivian people from danger.

A report released by the Police Headquarters highlighting police services in the past year says that when the year 2011 began, criminal gangs were on the rise in Male’ and other Atolls, which meant that murder and assault using sharp objects, even during daytime, had almost become common practice.

The report says that the police exercised their authority within the limits of the law to deal with these issues in order to protect Maldivians from danger. The result is a relative decline in such inhumane conduct, and restoration of peace in the society.

“…The result of preparing for internal and external obstacles, and the effort put into protecting Maldivians from danger is, God willing, the relative decline in the aforementioned inhumane activities and restoration of peace and quiet in the society,” says the report.

The report said that even last year, a group of people were involved in financial fraud in relation to business and other monetary dealings. Several offices, shops and companies faced the fear of being robbed of their earnings before their money could be deposited in the bank, and the police saved millions of Rufiya on several such occasions.

“In addition, a large network involved in using forged cards to withdraw large sums of money from local and foreign banks, was broken down. The police are proud to have served Maldivians in 2011, in returning their rightful financial and physical belongings to them.”

The report also said that the Police acted professionally in ending the several lawful and unlawful protests held in various areas of the country.

It also said that much effort was put into closing the doors allowing drugs into the country. Several such networks were broken down, with numerous cases being taken to court and others submitted to the PG Office.

The report also said that large successful operations were undertaken last year by the police. As an example, it noted having fulfilled their responsibility in carrying out the local council elections in a peaceful manner.

It also said that the police activities in Addu City and Fuah Mulaku in conjunction with the SAARC Summit was the biggest operation by the police outside of Male’ to date. The fact that the project started from scratch, and ended up being a hundred percent success story, is the result of the “mega” effort put into it by the Police.
