Candidates can spend up to MVR 564M

Elections Commission (EC) has decided that presidential candidates can spend up to MVR 564 million on their campaigns.

The figure is calculated at the rate of maximum MVR 2,000 per eligible voter.

282,395 people are eligible to vote in this year’s election.

According to General Elections Act, both private citizens and legal entities can donate to campaigns. Private individuals can donate up to MVR 2.8 million, and legal entities can donate up to MVR 11.2 million.

However, the following cannot be donors:

  • Foreigners
  • Foreign governments or institutions
  • International organizations
  • Anonymous donors
  • State institutions, except for the funds entitled to political parties by law
  • State-owned enterprises

Presidential candidates are required a separate bank account for their campaign.
