Girl raped in Vilimal

A 16-year old girl has been raped in Vilimalé, the fifth ward of Malé. The police have started investigations on the matter in the geographically separate, tiny island located at a distance of about 15-minute boat-ride from Malé.

The police said that the case was filed this afternoon, around 3:25, and that the case has been looked into as an extraordinarily serious issue.

Tonight, the police issued an announcement with the photograph of the suspected man, who has apparently gone into hiding.

“Any person who has got any information about this man is requested hereby to call 119, or 3322111, or 3000600 or 3331510 or 9790163 and share the information. The Maldives Police Services also guarantees that security necessary for any informant would be provided”, read the announcement by the police.

The police also said that the girl was walking on the road with her younger brother, when the man seemingly had her enter a residential house, where she was raped. Her younger brother was kept in another room in the same house whilst the incident happened.

The police have made a public statement, condemning “such vile and degraded acts conducted against children in the strongest terms”. The statement also said that the police would do everything and anything necessary for bringing people who commit such acts to justice.
