EC: 22 resorts did not respond regarding voting arrangements for workers

Elections Commission (EC), on Wednesday, stated that 22 resorts did not respond to the commission’s queries regarding voting arrangements for resort employees in the upcoming presidential elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, EC’s Vice President Ismail Habeeb said a total of 604 ballot boxes will be placed in this year’s elections of which 78 will be located in resorts.

Meanwhile, 69 resorts, as per Habeeb, had informed the commission they will be sending their employees to nearby islands to vote.

However, Habeeb stressed 22 resorts had not responded to EC regarding placing ballot boxes or sending employees to nearby islands to vote. One of these resorts is presently closed.

Male’, where both registered residents of the capital as well as a large number of people from the atolls will vote, will have 187 ballot boxes; 39 of which will be Hulhumale’ and 10 of which will be VIlimale’.

319 ballot boxes will be set up in residential islands outside the greater Male’ area. Two of such boxes will be kept at industrial islands while five of such boxes will be kept in prisons.

13 ballot boxes will be placed abroad. Countries where ballot boxes will be placed:

• Trivandrum and New Delhi, India
• Colombo, Sri Lanka
• Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
• Singapore
• Bangkok, Thailand
• Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
• London, England
• Tokyo, Japan

Four ballot boxes will be set up in Sri Lanka and four in Malaysia. The rest of the countries will have one ballot box each.
